Jewelry Storage Tips
Storing jewelry properly can decrease the chances of spoiling your jewelry dramatically. If you love your jewelry, you need to take care of it.
Rule Number 1: Make sure your jewelry is safe and secure. Throwing it in a jewelry box can cause scratching, tangling and even breakage. Store your pieces in jewelry boxes, jewelry pouches, roll them in a felt cloth or even an air-tight Ziploc bag will work. Remember, even if you have a jewelry box, you need to make sure it is separated by small jewelry holders. Large compartments within a jewelry box allow the jewelry to roll together and this can cause damage. There are even pouches, leather portfolios and clutches that are travel friendly and widely available.
Rule Number 2 : The metal on your jewelry can tarnish when it is not worn. The alloys in gold will turn the metal a reddish brown and silver will turn black. To keep your metals shiny and vibrant, you can purchase silver anti-tarnishing strips and place them in your jewelry storage space. These strips absorb the oxidants that will tarnish your jewelry.
Rule Number 3 : If you plan to store your jewelry for an extended length of time, make sure it is in a cool, dry place. Never store your jewelry in a damp environment. These circumstances can damage your jewelry even if they are protected within a soft pouch or leather compartment. Remember, prolonged periods of moisture are bad for your jewelry. Also, remember to store your jewelry facing up. Necklaces, bracelets and earring posts can start to bend if they are not positioned properly.
Rule Number 4 : Add a drop of baby oil to your jewelry once in awhile to keep the moisture in the stone, keep the metal lubricated and to ward off dust and dirt. This procedure will also keep your jewelry's luster for longer periods of time.
Rule Number 5 : Inspect your jewelry periodically. Look for scratches, tangles or breaks in your pieces. Look for signs that your metals are starting to tarnish. If you catch these signs early, they are easier to take care of. Taking these cautionary steps to prevent damage will keep your jewelry looking beautiful and can help them to last a lifetime.
