You’ve all heard the saying; diamonds are a girl’s best friend. These radiant beauties have been captivating the hearts of women for centuries. Diamonds were named the official birthstone for April by the National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is also the gemstone for the 30th and 60th anniversaries. They are widely known as being the hardest natural substance in the world. The ancient Greeks called diamonds “adamas” which means unconquerable. It is composed of carbon and is part of the isometric crystal system. It can be found in hues of colorless, yellow, green, orange, red, brown, black and blue. 75 to 80 % of the world’s natural diamonds are used for industrial purposes and about 25 % are used for gemstones. The minerals durability, unmatched cutting ability and rare beauty make diamonds high in demand.

Bernie Madoff and his wife Ruth lived a privileged life. Apartments on Manhattan’s tony Upper East Side, a 55.5 foot luxury yacht named “Bull”, two private planes on call, a $9 million mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, memberships at exclusive country clubs, millions of dollars worth of expensive jewelry and $3 million beachfront property on Long Island. Then, suddenly, everything changed for the former investment manager of Ascot partners. The downturn in the national economy and the crisis in stock market had a lot of businesses and families wanting to pull out their money they had invested with Madoff. The truth was, as many of his clients would soon find out, there wasn’t any money. Bernie Madoff and his multi-billion dollar portfolio was all a lie.

Some say the trend got started when celebrities started wearing gorgeous diamond and gemstone right hand rings on the red carpet; but jewelers say that right hand rings have been sold for years; they just didn’t have a name until now.

Before the Academy Awards was even over, everyone was dishing about Angelina Jolie’s jaw-dropping 115-carat Lorraine Schwartz emerald earrings and matching…are you ready for this… 65-carat emerald ring. Who could forget Taraji P. Henson’s opulent 19-century Fred Leighton diamond floral necklace? Best supporting actress winner Penelope Cruz dazzled in a classic Chopard platinum necklace fashioned out of 69 carats of cushion cut diamonds. Now, we may have seen a lot of famous celebrities strut their stuff on the red carpet, but the real star of the show was a certain look: vintage. Vintage looks evoke old Hollywood glamour and it definitely made a comeback this year.

Aquamarine by milminedesign
Aquamarine, which means “water of the sea”, is the March birthstone as named by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. These gorgeous gemstones typically have a gorgeous blue hue that is reminiscent of the breathtaking waters in the Caribbean Sea. In fact, many cultures believe that aquamarine gems harness the energy from the ocean. Long ago, sailors would wear amulets of aquamarine because they believed that the gem would instill bravery and help them overcome any storm.
